A major anniversary deserves a major celebration. The instrumentation alone, with a top-class line-up of soloists and the wonderful Tölzer Knabenchor, is as exquisite as the occasion. None less than Jörg Widmann, who has been associated with the MKO for decades, will wield the baton. His perceptive, much-praised reflection on Mendelssohn with the orchestra promises to reach a new apex at this anniversary concert.

A major anniversary deserves a major celebration. The instrumentation alone, with a top-class line-up of soloists and the wonderful Tölzer Knabenchor, is as exquisite as the occasion. None less than Jörg Widmann, who has been associated with the MKO for decades, will wield the baton. His perceptive, much-praised reflection on Mendelssohn with the orchestra promises to reach a new apex at this anniversary concert.

Mendelssohn’s compositions bookend Widmann’s “Friedenskantate” (Peace Cantata). Premiered in 2023 in St Thomas Church in Leipzig, the cantata incorporates biblical texts as well as texts from Matthias Claudius, Jean Paul, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Bertolt Brecht and Paul Gerhardt that deal with war and peace, death and reconciliation. Musically, Widmann takes up the cantata “Die Elenden sollen essen” (The wretched shall eat), with which Bach officially took up his post as Thomaskantor in 1723. In the polarised here and now, Widmann’s message of peace is a powerful plea for confidence – a hopeful “Dona nobis pacem”.

The concert will be broadcast live by BR-Klassik.
