The Munich Bach Choir and the Munich Bach Orchestra as well as renowned soloists will perform the opulent oratorio in all its stirring, overwhelming expressiveness in the Isarphilharmonie under the baton of Johanna Soller.

With the choir’s mighty sound and the contemplative beauty of the recitatives and arias, this musical masterpiece is a unique concert experience every time. All the more as choir and orchestra have a long track record of spirited Bach interpretations inspired by historical performance practice, going all the way back to their foundation by Karl Richter in 1954. With major worldwide tours, Karl Richter led the ensemble to international renown in its first decades. Since the autumn of 2023, the choir and orchestra’s artistic director is Johanna Soller.

The setting of the passion of Christ is one of Johann Sebastian Bach’s most extensive and momentous sacral compositions. A performance of the St Matthew Passion is a must on Good Friday throughout the world. Bach’s Baroque masterpiece is monumental in both its duration and its instrumentation, with the composer specifying two choirs and two orchestras as well as a host of soloists. After Bach’s death, the work fell into oblivion, being “rediscovered” only in 1829, when Felix Mendelssohn performed an abridged version of it.
