The immensely difficult circumstances that creatives were plunged into by the Corona pandemic sent composer Markus Lehmann-Horn on a roller-coaster ride of emotions. That state of mind gave rise to “Indignation”, an energy-laden orchestral work in which the percussion, which is arranged around the orchestra, provides the powerful drive.

Paul Wittgenstein’s budding career as a concert pianist may have been cut short if it hadn’t been for his dogged determination. Even the tragedy of losing his right arm in the First World War was not going to stop him from returning to the stage. When he commissioned Maurice Ravel with a piano concerto for the left hand, the composer responded with an emotionally laden virtuoso masterpiece. The pianist Alice Sara Ott, whose virtuoso skill is well-known in Munich, takes on the challenge of making this work for one hand sound as if it could only possibly be played with two. Stravinsky’s “Le sacre du printemps” caused outrage at its premiere. While the work no longer shocks today’s listeners, its primal, elemental force still has the capacity to impress.
