Brahms and Liszt are among the composers previously inspired to create variations on the theme from Paganini’s Caprice No 24. Unlike his predecessors, however, Sergei Rachmaninoff added a ritual depth to his Paganini variations by effectively interweaving the famous melody with the ponderous Dies Irae motif. Italian pianist Beatrice Rana has chosen Rachmaninoff’s scintillating work for her debut with the Munich Philharmonic. Rimsky-Korsakov’s symphonic suite “Scheherazade” is a showpiece for orchestral soloists, with oriental fairytale images that can feed everyone’s imagination. Anna Thorvaldsdottir also relies on intensive sensory impressions. Her works feature an unmistakeable atmospheric musical language that has already enchanted concert audiences from Los Angeles to Tokyo. The Munich Philharmonic is giving the world premiere of “ARCHORA” – the latest orchestral work from the Icelandic composer.

Programme

  • Anna Thorvaldsdottir: “ARCHORA”, commissioned work and world premiere
  • Sergei Rachmaninoff: Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini for Piano and Orchestra in A minor, Op 43
  • Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov: “Scheherazade”, Op 35
