Richard Strauss’ Duett-Concertino was based on a tale – Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Princess and the Swineherd”. With the two solo instruments, played by orchestra members Alexandra Gruber and Raffaele Giannotti, Strauss conjures up a merry fairy tale world inhabited by vividly portrayed characters. Considered the icons of French Impressionism, Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel are often, unjustly, placed in the same basket. With Debussy’s “La Mer” and Ravel’s second “Daphnis et Chloé” suite, the Munich Philharmonics, demonstrate the differences between the former’s impressionistic mystification of nature and the latter’s masterfully conceived sound dramaturgy.
