Alma Mahler, too, played a decisive role in her husband’s life. In his last symphonic composition – the Adagio from the unfinished Symphony No 10 – Gustav Mahler reflects not only on a farewell to life but equally on the loss of Alma’s love. Drawing on numerous quotations, including passages from Mahler’s Fifth, Dmitri Shostakovich looks back on the composer’s life in his final symphony – a musical closing monologue.
