With its piercing brass fanfares and sweeping romantic passages, the Sea Hawk overture brings the heroism and elegance of 1940s adventure films to the concert hall.
In John Williams’ music, the sound of the French horn invites us to drift off into the past. Performed by Matías Piñeira, principal horn player with the Munich Philharmonic, the horn evokes memories of military skirmishes and hunting scenes as well as idyllic, pastoral landscapes.
The world’s arguably most famous lovers have been immortalised in numerous works of musical literature. Thanks to its inspired melodies and great rhythmic power, Sergei Prokofiev’s version of Romeo and Juliet is one of the highlights of his musical oeuvre. In this concert, the American conductor James Gaffigan presents a curated selection from Prokofiev’s famous ballet.
