This evening spans an arc from free improvisation in Iranian composer Golfam Khayam’s I am not a tale to be told to precisely notated bird calls in Olivier Messiaen’s Oiseaux exotiques. Joseph Haydn’s Symphony in G minor combines classical clarity with dramatic drive, whilst Maurice Ravel’s Piano Concerto for the Left Hand derives the greatest freedom from its constraints. The programme concludes with Franz Schreker’s Nachtstück: a liminal state of longing and memory.
