The question of the artist’s role in society is the theme of Paul Hindemith’s opera “Mathis der Maler” – a question that is also central to Hindemith’s own biography.

A by-product of the opera about the painter Matthias Grünewald, this symphony unexpectedly brought Hindemith into the crossfire of the National Socialists. A smear campaign in the press eventually led to a boycott of his works and drove the composer into exile. Beethoven’s Symphony No 6, by contrast, is a musical monument not to an artist, but to nature and country life. In contrast to the “Fifth”, the “Pastoral” ends not with rousing triumph but a simple “shepherd’s song” that expresses harmony between humans and nature.

Programme

  • Paul Hindemith: Symphony “Mathis der Maler” (Mathias the Painter)
  • Ludwig van Beethoven: Piano Concerto No 6 in F major, Op 68 “Pastoral”
