Jazz legend Duke Ellington is exemplary for African-American composers. His orchestral triptych, Three Black Kings, is a musical tribute to three mythological and historical Black personalities. Contemporary composer Julia Wolfe’s music is a reflection on historical and current events. The German cellist Alban Gerhardt presents the German premiere of Wolfe’s energetic cello concerto Wind in My Hair. Charles Ives is regarded as the central figure of American New Music and the first American symphonic composer to emancipate himself from the European musical tradition. In his Symphony No 2, Ives quotes traditional American melodies and, interweaving these with references to European Romanticism, creates an expressive, multi-layered, soundscape.
