Fiery and exuberant are apt adjectives for Antonín Dvořák’s “Carnival” overture – a hymn to life, to colourful costume and letting your hair down in the carnival season. Ernest Bloch, on the other hand, strikes pensive, even philosophical notes in his “Schelomo” rhapsody for cello and orchestra, in which soloist Gautier Capuçon embodies the voice of the legendary Israeli King Solomon. In dialogue with his citizens, represented by the orchestra, Solomon ponders human greatness and the meaning of life. Richard Strauss’s musical travel guide “Aus Italien” (From Italy) is a wonderful opportunity to immerse yourself in dreams of the warming southern sun in the middle of winter. Only the final movement, in which Strauss incorporates the Italian popular song “Funicolì, funicolà”, will awaken other associations in die-hard carnival goers.
