in 1972, Carl Orff noted the first four chords of “O Fortuna” in the Munich Philharmonic’s Golden Book and thanked his “beloved Munich Philharmonic” for the joint concerts. Since its founding, the orchestra had dedicated itself to promoting southern German composers, and this naturally included Carl Orff as one of the 20th century’s major tonal composers. July 2020 marked the 125th anniversary of Carl Orff’s birth. Alas, most of the concerts planned in honour of the Munich composer fell victim to the pandemic. Neither did Fortuna smile upon the Munich Philharmonic, which planned to open their 2020/21 season with “Carmina Burana”. With symbolic timing, the cantata about the coming and going of earthly fortune now concludes the 2022/23 season of subscription concerts. For this performance, the Munich Philharmonic is joined by its valued long-standing partner, the Philharmonic Choir, as well as the Children’s Choir of the Gärtnerplatz Theatre. The “magical images” that Orff ascribes to his work in the work’s full title are expertly choreographed by the principal conductor of the Brussels Opera, Alain Altinoglu.
