Franz Schubert’s Great C major Symphony, which is variously numbered 8 (in Germany) or 9 (in most non-German-speaking countries), marks a turning point in the history of the genre. With its vast scope and the “heavenly length” praised by Robert Schumann, it transcended all previous scopes of magnitude and paved new ways for symphonic composition in the wake of Beethoven.
