On Friday, 4 July 2025 at 8 PM, this year’s Kurt Maas Jazz Award Concert will take place at the Isarphilharmonie in Gasteig HP8. The Jazz Institute of the Munich University of Music and Theatre (HMTM) has been presenting the Kurt Maas Jazz Award to inspire Munich jazz students since 2013.

This year’s prizewinners Fernanda von Sachsen, Edi May and Katharina Pfeifer with their bands as well as the two Kurt Maas Jazz Scholars from São Paulo, Laryssa Alves and Marlon Cordeiro, will take centre stage at the concert. Together with other students and teachers from the Jazz Institute, they will perform with special guest Danilo Pérez.

The Panamanian pianist and composer performed with Dizzy Gillespie and Wayne Shorter. His innovative artistic approach has made him a multiple Grammy award winner and a sought-after teacher. As Artistic Director of the Berklee Global Jazz Institute, he is the driving force behind the successful collaboration between HMTM and Boston’s Berklee College of Music.

The winner of the finals, which took place with five competitors in February, is jazz singer Fernanda von Sachsen. The second prize went to Edi May on saxophone and the third to Katharina Pfeifer, also saxophone.

The concert will also be broadcast in a free live stream on the HMTM YouTube channel.
