This evening, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and Choir under the baton of Sir Simon Rattle performs a varied programme of works by Igor Stravinsky. The concert concludes with the seminal modernist opus Le sacre du printemps (The Rite of Spring).

About his Symphony of Psalms, Igor Stravinsky wrote: “The Psalms are poems of praise, but also of anger and judgement; curses, even.” He had written them at a time of personal tragedy, when the composer’s family was beset by tuberculosis, which ultimately killed is wife and eldest daughter.

“It is not a work that offers simple comfort, and the God portrayed in it can be stern, even cruel,” says Sir Simon Rattle. But the symphony also has many moments of otherworldly beauty and tranquillity. The work is book-ended by the sombre Chant funèbre, the otherworldly five-minute-long Le roi des étoiles (which, according to Debussy, could only be performed on “Sirius and Aldebaran”) and the scandal-inducing classic Le sacre du printemps: an evening of Stravinsky, rich in contrasts, colour and surprises.
