What looks like a plain container from the outside actually houses a time machine. This virtual reality project recreates the long-gone “Himmelsburg” chapel of Weimar palace, Johann Sebastian Bach’s place of work during his time in the duchy.

The historic chapel of Schloss Weimar – dubbed “Himmelsburg” (castle of heaven) and tragically destroyed by a fire in 1774 – was where J.S.Bach composed the majority of his pioneering organ works between 1708 and 1717. His close to 25 Weimar cantatas spelled his breakthrough as the grand master of Lutheran church music.

Now, this mythical location so intimately associated with Bach has been resurrected as a virtual reality experience. The journey begins when you put on the VR goggles and headphones that take you on a virtual journey back in time to Himmelsburg chapel. As the container gradually dissolves, you find yourself sitting on a church pew inside the chapel, listening to Bach’s cantata “Himmelskönig, sei willkommen”. The introduction to the VR experience is available in German and English.
