Few artists on the international music scene have had a greater influence on acoustic and electronic jazz and R&B than Herbie Hancock. As the immortal Miles Davis said in his autobiography: “Herbie was the step after Bud Powell and Thelonious Monk, and I haven’t heard anybody yet who has come after him.”
His best-known songs include Watermelon Man, ESP, Chameleon and his 80s mega-hit, Rockit.
In the course of his career, Hancock has worked with Miles Davis and Donald Byrd as well as countless other names, such as Stevie Wonder, Tina Turner, Joni Mitchell, Wayne Shorter, Oscar Peterson, Chick Corea, Bill Laswell, Sting, Annie Lennox, John Mayer, Christina Aguilera, Paul Simon, Carlos Santana, Joss Stone, Jeff Beck, Seal, Pink, Dave Matthews, Anoushka Shankar, Chaka Khan and many more. For his tribute River: The Joni Letters, released in 2007, Hancock was one of the very few jazz musicians to receive the honour of a Grammy for the best album of the year. Considered a true icon of modern music, he received a Grammy for his life’s work in 2016.
