Estampie & Qntal Anniversary Concert

Mediaeval melodies, lyrics and timeless themes form the core of Estampie’s repertoire. Their creative work focuses on encounters with foreign cultures, traditional musical styles and religions, among others from India, Mongolia, Persia and Morocco. Their career has taken the founding members, Sigrid Hausen and Michael Popp, together with their fellow musicians, halfway around the world; they have released several CDs and carried out cross-disciplinary projects in the fields of theatre, dance and performance.

The current year also marks the anniversary of Qntal’s stage debut. Founded by Michael Popp and Syrah, the band with the mysterious name successfully bridges the gap between rock/pop, indie, medieval music and avant-garde. Performing at major festivals around the world, these versatile musicians have been reaching a young, open-minded audience for 35 years now. Released and performed worldwide, their nine concept albums speak for themselves.

Both ensembles appeal to the unconscious and open vistas onto worlds of wonder. In the first part of the concert, Estampie traces a journey from its early days as a small ensemble and its initial repertoire to the larger, international projects of recent years. The sounds of their fascinating, exotic instruments – such as the dilruba, tar and santur – blend with the vocals to create a rich tapestry of sound.

Qntal will then take to the stage for the second half of this spectacular double concert, blending electronic sounds with enchanting vocals and exotic instruments. Qntal takes you on a journey through its musical oeuvre, which seems to know no bounds.
