Utum Yang (flute) and Julia Ito (piano) founded the “Duo Fantasia” in 2015 with the idea that music itself is a kind of fantasy, being a wonderful way to describe fantastic scenes and immerse oneself in extraordinary worlds.

George Frideric Handel’s Water Music is a perfect example of this concept. The concert begins with its Suite No 1, with its yearning sounds from the Puszta, followed by the traditional Japanese piece Tsuru No Sugomori (“Nesting Cranes”), which Utum Yang arranged for flute. Julia Ito’s rendition of Frédéric Chopin’s Barcarolle, Op 60 conjures up images of a swaying boat.

The concert’s second half begins with the reference-rich piece “Klimawandel” (Climate Change),  a piece in four parts that was also penned by Julia Ito. It includes such expressive sections as “Contaminated Water”, “The Great Rain – Sinking City” and “Ark”. The monumental impressionist solo piano piece “L’isle joyeuse” by Claude Debussy is followed by the Sonata Undine, in which Carl Reinecke describes a female water spirit. Duo Fantasia’s performance culminates in the furious and rousing “Carnevale di Venezia” by Giulio Briccialdi, with its familiar main theme, an arrangement of the Neapolitan melody best known in Germany as the song “Mein Hut, der hat drei Ecken”.

The increase in natural disasters in recent years has become apparent to us all. Duo Fantasia takes up this topical issue with various compositions to draw attention to the importance of conserving nature and protecting the environment.
