The Munich University Symphony Orchestra (HSO) fills the Isarphilharmonie with the sound of French romanticism and impressionism.
The HSO Munich is made up of students of the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich (HMTM) striving for a career as orchestral musicians. The orchestra’s director since the winter semester 2017/18 is Prof Marcus Bosch. Rehearsing several programmes covering the various musical epochs in each academic year, students gain extensive experience in orchestral practice. On this evening, the focus is on French romanticism and impressionism. The orchestra demonstrates aspects like how Ravel breaks up the three-four time in La Valse with rhythmic shifts and accents, which makes the music seem both orderly and chaotic at the same time – a precursor to the demise of the Viennese waltz. In Daphnis et Chloé, by contrast, Ravel conjures up an impressive variety of artistically combined tonal colours. Chausson and Boulanger’s works complement Ravel’s sound worlds with emotional and stylistic depth: in his Poème, Chausson creates the romantic intensity of an almost bygone era, while Boulanger looks to the modern age with lyrical expressiveness.
