“His music is like a Persian rug: beautiful and overwhelming, but also complex, of great intellect and full of tragedy.” And though it raises questions, the composer does not leave the listener guessing, but gently accompanies them throughout. Khatia Buniatishvili speaks of Sergei Rachmaninoff with tenderness and affection – not surprisingly, given the many parallels between the Georgian pianist and the Russian composer’s music: energy-laden, at times oscillating between drama and boundless melancholy, between reflection and seductive charm, ever the virtuoso in her technical brilliance. Above all, music and pianist share a tremendous vitality. “To be creative, you need solitude, even moments of difficulty. Artistic creation doesn’t just happen; there are battles to be fought” (concerti).
