Taiwan is an island caught between the forces of nature and cultural diversity. Earthquakes, typhoons and changing circumstances have taught people to find rhythm and order amidst change and uncertainty. This experience also shapes the island’s musicians: resilience does not stem from resistance, but from keen perception and the ability to respond to change through music.
Haydn’s Piano Trio in C major epitomises order and clarity. Kaija Saariaho’s Light and Matter creates a space in which form dissolves like light through the canopy of leaves. Yuan-Chen Li’s Rain Noir Noir, inspired by Taiwanese folk songs, transforms rain and thunder into soundscapes of resilience. Mendelssohn’s Piano Trio No 1in D minor brings the evening to a close with its cohesive structure and passionate melodies – a testament to the coexistence of order and emotion, and resilience amidst fragility.
