In cooperation with the Centre des Musiques Didier Lockwood in Paris, students and teachers of the university’s Jazz Institute will perform in various ensembles and formations.

The Jazz Institute of the Munich University of Music and Theatre has provided jazz education for over thirty years now. Founded in the late 1980s at the Richard Strauss Conservatory (RSK) at the Gasteig under the direction of jazz musician and Berklee graduate Kurt Maas, it soon developed into a centre of excellence for jazz education under the direction of jazz trumpeter Prof. Claus Reichstaller. Since 2008, the Jazz Institute has been part of the HMTM, Bavaria’s largest national university of the arts. About 80 students from around 20 different countries are currently studying at the HMTM Jazz Institute, whose classes have been taking place in the Gasteig HP8 since October 2022.

This year, André Charlier (drums) and Benoît Sourisse (piano, Hammond organ) from the Centre des Musiques Didier Lockwood (Paris) are working with the students in the Munich University Jazz Orchestra. The highlight of this iconic French jazz duo’s visit is the workshop’s final concert on Thursday, 11 December 2025 at 7 PM in Hall X.

For several years now, the Paris Centre des Musiques Didier Lockwood (CMDL) has been holding a European big band workshop in which students from the Jazz Institute of the University of Music and Theatre Munich also regularly take part. Now, the two exceptional French musicians André Charlier (drums) and Benoît Sourisse (piano, Hammond organ) are coming to Munich to work on a varied programme with the Munich University Jazz Orchestra.

André Charlier and Benoît Sourisse, known as the Charlier/Sourisse duo, have maintained a musical and personal partnership of exceptional quality and longevity for over 30 years now. The duo has collaborated on numerous albums with artists such as Didier Lockwood, Biréli Lagrène, Philip Catherine, Jerry Bergonzi, Kenny Garrett, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Alex Sipiagin, Perico Sambeat, Bendik Hofseth, Randy Brecker and Tierney Sutton.
