A special highlight awaits right at the start of the new season: Sir Simon Rattle with a concert performance of Alban Berg’s Wozzeck, in which Malin Byström and Christian Gerhaher lead an excellent cast of soloists.

Based on Georg Büchner’s incomplete drama, the opera tells the story of the soldier Wozzeck, a man broken by the world. Berg’s music cuts into the listener’s ears, harsh, yearning and harrowing, with a gripping tonal language, interspersed with military rhythms and lyrical tenderness.

On the work’s premiere in Berlin on 14 December 1925 – almost exactly 100 years ago – Alma Mahler, to whom Berg dedicated the opera, wrote: “One trembled, as if before something unheard of.” An impressive masterpiece between atonality and emotion that challenges – as well as rewards – the heart, mind and ears.
