BRSO: Staud, Nielsen, Sibelius; Conducted by Santtu-Matias RouvaliChristoph Sietzen (percussion)
In Johannes Maria Staud’s Whereas the Reality Trembles, percussionist Christoph Sietzen lets the composer’s multi-layered “melodies” resound with electrifying precision. Far from smoothing over the scintillating contrasts, the evening’s conductor, Santtu-Matias Rouvali, will accentuate them with verve.

In Whereas the Reality Trembles, which was co-commissioned by the BRSO, the percussion – which includes hanging flower pots and tiles – is not just the work’s rhythmic motor, but also its seismographic narrator.
This is followed by Carl Nielsen’s overture to Maskarade, which bursts with Nordic energy and esprit. The evening concludes with Jean Sibelius’ Symphony No 3 with its supple clarity, far removed from romantic hyperbole.
