A varied concert by the BRSO with Sir Simon Rattle and the mezzo-soprano Magdalena Kožená. Joseph Haydn has accompanied Sir Simon Rattle all his life. The BRSO’s chief conductor says he would even take him along to a desert island.

Now the conductor is turning his attention to one of Haydn’s marvellous “Paris symphonies”. The playful air of this D major symphony contrasts with Johannes Brahms’ mature, oeuvre-crowning Fourth with its nostalgic, melancholy tone and formal mastery. Two end-points of a great musical spectrum. And in between, Ondřej Adámek’s Where Are You? – a gripping drama about the search for God with quasi-ritual elements and a breathtaking treatment of language. Magdalena Kožená lends her inimitable voice to the song cycle, which was premiered by the BRSO under pandemic conditions and will now finally be performed to a live audience.
