In this concert, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra will perform two special works under the baton of Sir Simon Rattle: Robert Schumann’s Symphony No 2 and Igor Stravinsky’s radiant Firebird.
Quietly yet solemnly triumphant, a brass fanfare introduces the first movement of Robert Schumann’s Symphony No 2, followed by a moving Allegro that alternates between dark and light. The changing moods here seem to reflect the phase in Schumann’s life in which he found a new lease of life with the composition of this symphony after long periods of depression with spells of dizziness, nervousness and alarming weakness.
In contrast to this romantically tinged introspection, Igor Stravinsky’s Firebird is a modern, colourfully orchestrated fireworks of expressiveness, conducted here by the BRSO’s principal conductor Sir Simon Rattle.
