This evening’s concert juxtaposes Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Paris Symphony with Franz Schubert’s The Great symphony in C major, which was never performed during his lifetime.

With his Symphony No 31, Mozart wanted to leave his mark in the French metropolis and announced his arrival not only with the proverbial trumpets, but with a whole wind section comprising clarinets, flutes, oboes, bassoons and horns. The magnificent Paris Symphony is a fitting counterpart to Schubert’s The Great. At the time, the 60-minute-long symphony was considered too demanding and disappeared into the archives until Schumann dug it up again and initiated its premiere. It is heartbreaking that Schubert himself never heard the notes of his wonderful Great C major symphony.

Unfortunately, Gustavo Dudamel had to cancel his participation at the Isarphilharmonie concerts on 15, 16 and 18 January for personal reasons. We are delighted to have secured maestro Paavo Järvi for the project. The three concerts will take place as planned under his direction and with the same programme.
