Throughout his life, Berlioz, a pioneer of romanticism, was enthusiastic to the point of obsession about Shakespeare’s dramas. But not wanting to turn Romeo and Juliet into an opera, he sought to find a new form that addressed the audience’s imagination as imaginary theatre: While Berlioz entrusts the lovers’ voices entirely to the orchestra, the outstanding Bavarian Radio Chorus takes centre stage in this symphony, embodying the two warring families Montague and Capulet as a double chorus singing against each other.
