The year 2025 marks the 275th anniversary of the death of Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750) and would have been his 340th birthday. His St Matthew Passion moves listeners like few other compositions, evoking both sorrow and solace.

Bach is presumed to have performed the work for the first time in 1727 at the Good Friday Vespers in Leipzig’s St Thomas Church. Today, the St Matthew Passion occupies a special place in Bach’s oeuvre and is the indispensable prelude to the Easter holidays for Christians and classical music aficionados alike.
